Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations. – Deuteronomy 7:9
Israel required the reminder that God was God. They witnessed things with their eyes that we have never seen. God’s visible presence in the form of glory clouds by day and fiery flames by night. It is far easier to believe that God is God when you are witness to works that cannot be claimed by any other. We should seek to live in such a way that God’s power would be made manifest all around us. We should also rest in the reality that God’s Word is secure and that God truly is God – even in those seasons where there is little external evidence of His faithfulness.
Know – understand, recognize. the Lord your God is God – what simplicity in the promise that God is who He says He is. He is confident in Himself. We can lean on and learn from His confidence. the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love – He made the deal, He will uphold His end of the bargain. with those who love him and keep his commandments – God’s promise of covenant and steadfast love is contingent on our willingness to love him and obey. The covenant/steadfast love is not promised to those who choose to reject God’s love. To their loss they are missing all that God would desire to pour out for them. to a thousand generations – His faithfulness toward us has no end.
Prayer: Increase our faith and our confidence today, Jesus. Help us to know You, to know Your Father and to know the Spirit. Thank You for being faithful. Allow the world around us to see your faithfulness.
