I Am Only Visiting This Planet

For a long time, the idea of heaven wasn’t very appealing to me. It’s not that I didn’t believe it was real, it had just been explained to me in such a strange way. I would be in a church service, and the pastor would say, “You’d better get used to this because this is what we are going to be doing for eternity.”

I’d think to myself, “Heaven is going to be an endless church service? That sounds depressing!”
My band No Longer Music recently played at a Christian festival. After we had finished our show, we decided to check out the festival headliner. The arena was full when they played and their charismatic singer connected well with the audience.
Many Christians treat Jesus like a subject - something to study and apply to their lives. Often the motivation is that by applying “Jesus principals”, they will have a better life. I had this view growing up. I was always wondering what “Jesus facts” I needed to learn to make my life better and to avoid hell.

Who’s Getting the Credit for Your Art?

So often I think I’m doing things for God, but in reality I am just trying to get a name for myself. But God wants to get the glory for what I do.

Audience of One

Over the years I have had virtually every kind of experience as an artist. I have played for packed halls and empty clubs.
In my band "No Longer Music", I have very strict rules about what I expect in terms of holiness—not because I am legalistic, but because I know that as Christians in a position of public influence, God will hold us to a higher standard (James 3:1).

Heaven and Hell at the Jaap Eden Hall

We have used many different ways to demonstrate the Cross over the years. One time, my band was invited to play at the Jaap Edenhall in Amsterdam. Slayer was booked the night before, so the local newspapers dubbed the event “Heaven and Hell at the Jaap Eden Hall.”

We need God to break our hearts

Our band had just played a show in one of the most notorious male strip clubs in São Paulo, Brazil. There was hardcore pornography stored in the basement to be distributed to pornographic bookstores. To make room for the audience to watch our show, they had to remove a runway that ran through the center of the theater, which allowed the audience to get closer to the strippers.

We Need More Riots!

The first time we played in Beirut, Lebanon, hundreds of people gathered to hear the concert. The crowd was very attentive, and I could feel the power of the Holy Spirit during our show.
After the concert, I told them that only Jesus rose from the dead and because of that it is possible for us to know God.  Suddenly fistfights broke out in the crowd between those who wanted to attack us and those who liked what I was saying and wanted to defend us.
